I dedicate this essay to Shoshana Zuboff, whose groundbreaking work on surveillance capitalism has profoundly shaped my way of seeing the digital age. Her insights gave me the lens to recognize that technology is never neutral; it always carries with it hidden bargains. What often appears as progress and innovation is, in truth, a system that trades away our privacy, our dignity, and our freedom in exchange for the seductive promise of convenience.
My purpose in writing is to carry forward this vision into the everyday realities I see around me—in the streets of Patna and Delhi, in conversations across India’s small towns and crowded metros, and in parallel stories unfolding in Brazil, Kenya, China, Russia, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the United States. This is not an abstract academic exercise. It is a civic meditation on how technology infiltrates our most personal spaces: our homes, our health, our bedrooms, our relationships, even the silence of our sleep.
I believe that the price of convenience is never simply measured in money. It demands something far more precious: the surrender of our agency, the erosion of our autonomy, and the commodification of our innermost lives. By weaving together global examples, I hope to make visible how surveillance capitalism, dressed as convenience, turns the very texture of human life into a marketplace.
This essay is written in the conviction that laws alone cannot rescue us. What is needed is a deeper shift—where societies reclaim their values of freedom, dignity, and self-determination, and where the marginalized and the enlightened forge alliances to resist being reduced to mere data points. This is my small contribution to that larger struggle.
Surveillance or Autonomy: The Core Question
At the heart of our times lies a troubling question: Do we really need surveillance to live safe, efficient, and connected lives—or do we need autonomy to live free, dignified, and meaningful ones?
On the surface, surveillance often sells itself as protection. Governments argue that mass data collection is necessary to prevent terrorism, cybercrime, or pandemics. Corporations tell us that monitoring behavior helps them offer personalized services, better prices, and smarter devices. Parents use surveillance apps to track children; employers use them to monitor workers.
But beneath this surface lies the truth: surveillance and autonomy are not partners—they are rivals. The more we accept surveillance as necessary for safety or convenience, the more we normalize the erosion of our freedom and dignity.
The Real Cost of Convenience
Surveillance today rarely comes as a blunt demand. It comes packaged as convenience—the shortcut, the discount, the promise of “smarter” living. But the cost of this convenience operates on two levels: one tangible and felt immediately, the other intangible yet far more damaging.
Tangible Costs
Financial Nudges: Food delivery apps in India or Brazil offer steep rebates to pull people online. But once hooked, prices rise, delivery fees expand, and ads multiply. The discount was just bait.
Loss of Choice: Smart TVs may lock out certain apps or push sponsored content, leaving users with fewer options than before.
Time and Attention: Endless notifications, targeted ads, and manipulative feeds eat away hours of daily life.
These are costs people can feel in their wallets, schedules, and daily routines.
Intangible Costs
Beneath the surface, something deeper is lost:
Autonomy: Health apps nudge patients into sharing medical histories, stripping away their power to decide what is private.
Dignity: When bedroom devices track intimate moments under the guise of health insights, they turn human vulnerability into data points.
Freedom: Social media profiling in Southeast Asia silences dissent, as people self-censor to avoid digital punishment.
Agency: In Kenya’s M-Pesa system, transaction histories can be used by lenders to deny or price loans, reducing human worth to algorithmic risk scores.
The tangible costs pinch, but the intangible ones reshape our very sense of being. What is surrendered quietly is not just data, but the right to live unobserved, to make choices without manipulation, to keep parts of life untouched by the market.
Surveillance Dependency: The Trap
Once surveillance is accepted as convenience, it slowly turns into dependency.
In China, facial recognition makes entering a train station or paying for food nearly impossible without submitting to constant biometric scanning.
In the Middle East, authoritarian governments use spyware under the guise of “national security,” leaving citizens with no alternative to being tracked.
In small-town India, when online apps offer medicine at discounted rates, people are nudged into sharing their health histories. Yet when offline chemists like Chemist Box in Patna offer even greater discounts, many customers return—proving that better public or private services can act as antidotes to the surveillance trap.
Dependency arises because the system narrows our choices. If every device, app, and service demands our data, opting out means losing functionality, jobs, or access to essential goods.
Surveillance Deprivation: The Hidden Cost
Surveillance does not only take data. It takes away control. It deprives us of the right to decide what remains intimate and what enters the marketplace.
Tangible Deprivation
A smart fridge that stops working fully unless connected online directly deprives families of functional use.
Offline medicine purchases earning fewer rebates deprive customers of equal access to discounts, creating pressure to accept surveillance.
Intangible Deprivation
Loss of Private Circle: A smart TV listening to living room conversations erodes the sanctuary of family space.
Loss of Trust: When insurance companies mine medical purchases, the doctor–patient relationship—once sacred—is hollowed out.
Loss of Self-Respect: Constant surveillance at work, from Amazon warehouses in the US to call centers in the Philippines, reduces human beings to machine-like units, corroding dignity.
Loss of Courage: In Russia and parts of Southeast Asia, where online speech is heavily profiled, citizens lose not only their voice but their sense of safety in expressing themselves.
This is surveillance deprivation: the quiet theft of human worth, intimacy, and courage. It is felt both in blocked services and in the invisible reshaping of selfhood.
Convenience or Control?
We live in a world where convenience has become the ultimate selling point. From one-click online shopping to predictive healthcare apps, from smart homes to digital classrooms, everything is designed to save us time and effort. Yet, beneath this seamless convenience lies a deeper cost—our freedom, dignity, and autonomy. Technology today is evolving into what some call a “smart skin,” a near-invisible layer that wraps itself around our lives, capable of sensing, analyzing, and transmitting our most intimate actions and thoughts. This isn’t just technological progress; it risks becoming a new kind of techno-theocratic dominance where the omnipresent power of data replaces older forms of divine or state authority.
The central question before us is this: Are we moving towards a future where surveillance governs every choice, or can we preserve autonomy in the age of digital omnipresence? To understand, let us explore the prices we pay across different spheres of life.
Educational Choices: Shaping Minds or Shaping Markets?
Technology has transformed education—from online platforms like Coursera and Khan Academy to India’s SWAYAM initiative. Learning has never been so accessible. Yet, the price of this access is often invisible. Educational apps track student performance, preferences, and even attention spans through clicks and screen time. In the U.S., controversies around Google Classroom data mining show how children’s learning journeys are quietly commodified. In India, EdTech firms like Byju’s aggressively market “personalized learning,” but personalization is built on data extraction—students’ learning pace, weaknesses, and even psychological resilience become corporate assets.
The tangible cost here is dependence—families invest heavily in online tools, sidelining teachers and local schools. The intangible cost is the narrowing of intellectual freedom: students are nudged towards market-oriented courses, reinforcing the logic of employability over curiosity. The shaping of young minds becomes less about critical thinking and more about aligning to the demands of global corporations.
Health Choices: Healing or Harvesting Data?
Online pharmacies and health apps claim to democratize healthcare. Apps like Practo in India or Teladoc in the U.S. provide instant consultations, prescription delivery, and health tracking. But each click reveals intimate data—your illnesses, prescriptions, and even mood swings. Insurers increasingly use such data to profile risks, raising premiums or denying coverage.
In small Indian cities like Patna, many online medicine apps lure customers with discounts. Yet, when local chemist chains like Chemist Box offered even greater rebates, people shifted back offline despite the inconvenience. This shows that strong offline provisions can detox people from surveillance convenience. The deeper insight here is that robust public and private services can act as shields, preventing our health choices from being reduced to marketable data streams.
The tangible price is exposure—your health history may dictate your financial future. The intangible price is the erosion of dignity: health ceases to be a matter of trust between doctor and patient, becoming instead a data transaction governed by algorithms.
Family Connection Choices: Intimacy or Instrumentalization?
Social media was designed to connect families across distances. WhatsApp calls between migrant workers in Kerala and their parents in villages, or Facebook updates connecting diaspora families in Africa and the U.K., are lifelines. But every message, video, and emoji is parsed and stored. Of

The intangible price is the loss of genuine intimacy—family bonds mediated through platforms are subtly steered towards commodifiable behavior, from curated vacation posts to algorithmically suggested “memory recaps.” The private circle of kinship becomes a site of data harvesting.
Property Management Choices: Smart Homes, Smart Risks
The promise of “smart homes” is alluring—controlling lights, locks, and appliances through voice or apps. In South Africa and Brazil, smart security systems are marketed as solutions to crime. In Western cities, smart real estate promises energy efficiency. But the hidden cost is dependency on corporate platforms: if your smart lock is hacked or your data sold, your home itself becomes vulnerable.
The tangible price is material insecurity: hacked smart grids in Ukraine and ransomware attacks on U.S. pipelines show how even property is exposed. The intangible price is the erosion of sovereignty over one’s private domain—our homes, once sanctuaries, risk becoming transparent to corporate or state surveillance.
Information Access Choices: Knowledge or Nudging?
Google, YouTube, and TikTok are gateways to the world’s knowledge. But these are not neutral libraries—they are curated platforms optimized for profit. In Nigeria, students rely on YouTube tutorials for learning coding; in rural India, farmers depend on WhatsApp forwards for agricultural tips. Yet misinformation and targeted propaganda thrive on the same platforms.
The tangible cost is misinformed decisions—vaccine hesitancy in Africa fueled by WhatsApp rumors, or communal tensions in India triggered by viral fake news. The intangible cost is epistemic captivity: when your worldview is shaped not by truth but by algorithmic nudges, freedom of thought itself is compromised.
Ethical Choices: Autonomy or Algorithm?
Technology is increasingly shaping ethical decisions. Dating apps suggest who we should love. AI-driven hiring systems decide who gets jobs. Credit-scoring apps determine financial worthiness. In China’s social credit system, morality itself is quantified.
The tangible price is exclusion: people are denied opportunities not for who they are but for how they appear in data. The intangible price is loss of moral agency—ethical choices once shaped by conscience, community, or philosophy are now governed by opaque algorithms.
The Smart Skin: Towards a Techno-Theocratic Age?
As devices, apps, and sensors cover every surface of our lives, we are approaching an age of “smart skin”—an invisible but all-pervasive halo of data extraction. This resembles the divine aura once claimed by theocrats, except that the new halo is corporate, not spiritual. It does not promise salvation but rather behavioral prediction and control.
The risk is that surveillance convenience becomes surveillance dependency, and dependency becomes surveillance deprivation: the more we rely on these systems, the less we retain control over our own intimate circles of life.
Surveillance or Autonomy?
The Combined Effect – From Autonomy to Exposure
Together, deprivation and dependency strip individuals of autonomy. People are first deprived of the right to say no, then made dependent on the very systems that monitor them. What begins as freedom—control at your fingertips—turns into exposure, where your most intimate circle belongs not to you but to corporations and states.
The bedroom, the kitchen, the family WhatsApp group, the prayer mat, the metro ride—all become digitised, tracked, and monetised.
A Warning for the Future
The danger is not just personal but political. A society trained in surveillance dependency becomes easier to govern through nudges, rewards, and punishments. Citizens deprived of privacy and dependent on digital conveniences find it harder to resist power, speak freely, or even imagine alternatives.
This is why the fight is not just about data but about dignity, intimacy, and democracy itself. If people cannot keep control over their intimate circles, then what remains of freedom is only a carefully managed illusion.
The costs of convenience are both tangible and intangible. We lose money, privacy, and security, but more dangerously, we lose freedom, dignity, and agency. This is not just about data ownership; it is about whether human beings remain the authors of their own lives.
True autonomy will require more than laws—it will require societal value shifts towards dignity, solidarity, and agency. It will also require alliances between the marginalized and the enlightened to resist techno-theocratic dominance. As examples from Patna’s chemist stores to Silicon Valley’s EdTech giants show, strengthening human-centered services can detox society from overreliance on surveillance systems.
The choice is stark: either we allow the smart skin of technology to suffocate us into obedience, or we reclaim autonomy by weaving technology into society on our own terms.
Agency and Freedom in the Age of Surveillance Convenience and Surveillance Deprivation
Why Agency Matters
Agency is the foundation of freedom. It is the ability to make real choices—choices that matter, choices that shape one’s life. Without agency, freedom becomes an illusion: we may feel we are choosing, but the paths are predesigned, the outcomes pre-filtered, the scope of life already bounded by invisible architectures of power. Surveillance capitalism thrives by eroding this very foundation—sometimes gently, through the allure of convenience, and sometimes brutally, through forced deprivation.
Case 1: Social Credit Scores in China – The Algorithm as Moral Arbiter
China’s social credit system is one of the starkest examples of surveillance depriving citizens of their agency. Officially framed as a tool to build “trust” in society, it tracks financial behavior, online activity, and even personal associations.
If you repay loans on time, you are rewarded with better access to credit, faster services, or preferential school admissions for your children.
If you criticize government policy online, or even associate with someone who does, your score can drop—blocking you from buying train or plane tickets, getting a mortgage, or securing certain jobs.
This system converts ethical and political choice into economic punishment. A person may wish to support a dissenting writer, attend a protest, or simply read banned material—but the cost is not just legal risk, it is systemic exclusion from everyday life. The individual loses agency to act on conscience; the state dictates morality.
Here, freedom is hollowed out: people are not imprisoned by walls, but by invisible scores.
Case 2: Aadhaar in India – The Right to Survive as a Data Transaction
India’s Aadhaar system—the world’s largest biometric ID project—was introduced as a tool for inclusion, linking citizens to subsidies, welfare, and services. But it has also created surveillance deprivation when people cannot authenticate themselves.
Villagers in Jharkhand and Rajasthan have been denied food rations because fingerprint machines failed to recognize calloused or worn-out hands. In some tragic cases, people died of hunger despite having ration entitlements, simply because their biometric data did not match.
Migrant workers who move across states often lose access to welfare because Aadhaar is tied to fixed locations. Their right to mobility collides with the rigidity of the system.
Welfare recipients are made dependent on internet connections, biometric readers, and centralized databases. If the system crashes, their right to eat, live, and survive is suspended.
What is taken away is the basic agency to decide how to prove one’s existence as a citizen. Instead of the government serving people, people must serve the database. Survival itself becomes conditional upon digital legibility.
Case 3: Yandex and the Russian Surveillance Web – The Closed Ecosystem Trap
In Russia, Yandex has grown beyond being a search engine into an entire ecosystem—offering taxi rides, maps, emails, e-commerce, food delivery, and even banking. On the surface, this creates surveillance convenience: one app for everything. But the more one depends on it, the more one loses the right to choose alternatives.
Yandex services are deeply integrated with state surveillance systems, making data easily accessible to government agencies. Using it means your movements, purchases, and communications are visible not just to a corporation, but also to the state.
For consumers, the practical consequence is entrapment: the convenience of one ecosystem blocks out competition, leaving people with fewer real choices. Taxis ordered outside Yandex, for example, may be harder to find, more expensive, or less reliable.
When Russia tightens censorship laws, Yandex quietly complies—removing search results critical of the government or steering users toward state-approved news. Here, the agency to seek information freely is directly suffocated.
The result is that a person’s daily life—moving around the city, buying food, reading the news—is mediated by a surveillance infrastructure that curates reality itself.
The Pattern: Convenience and Deprivation as Two Sides of the Same Coin
Across these examples, the erosion of agency follows a common logic:
Surveillance Convenience seduces people with efficiency. Social credit promises fast loans; Aadhaar promises quick rations; Yandex promises one-stop services. People enter willingly, thinking they are gaining freedom.
Surveillance Deprivation punishes deviation. Step outside the approved path—criticize the government, fail a biometric scan, use a non-sanctioned app—and suddenly, you are excluded from life itself.
Together, they create a trap: you are free to choose only if you choose what the system approves.
Why This Matters for Freedom
Freedom is not about having infinite options; it is about having meaningful options you can act upon without fear or manipulation. When surveillance convenience narrows choices and surveillance deprivation blocks alternatives, the individual’s capacity for agency collapses.
Moral freedom shrinks, because choices of conscience carry unbearable economic or social costs.
Political freedom shrinks, because dissent is penalized not only by law but by daily-life exclusions.
Economic freedom shrinks, because entire ecosystems lock people into monopolized services.
Thus, the erosion of agency is not just a side effect of surveillance capitalism—it is its very purpose. To extract value, systems must ensure predictability. To ensure predictability, they must weaken freedom.
Reflections
The real danger of the surveillance age is not just that others know too much about us—it is that we no longer know whether we are still choosing freely at all. A farmer denied rations, a citizen denied travel, a consumer denied alternatives: each represents the silent theft of agency, and with it, the hollowing out of freedom itself.
If freedom is to survive, agency must be defended—not as a slogan, but as a living right: the right to err, to dissent, to choose inconvenient paths, and to live beyond the reach of invisible puppet strings.
Philosophical Anchors for the Age of Surveillance
Now I’ll map the long history of political and moral thought onto the problem I’ve been tracking: how surveillance convenience and surveillance deprivation erode agency, and therefore freedom. Below I bring together key thinkers across eras and traditions — Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Marx, Gramsci, Polanyi, Foucault, Arendt, Sen, Zuboff (and a few others) — and show, briefly and concretely, how each helps us understand the stakes and the remedies.
Socrates — the examined life
Socrates made a simple, radical claim: an unexamined life is not worth living. Agency requires self-reflection — the ability to question one’s desires, motives, and the structures that shape them. Surveillance convenience substitutes algorithmic nudges for self-examination: choices become reactions to engineered prompts rather than deliberate commitments. Socratic freedom is therefore compromised when our inner deliberations are shaped and monetized by external systems.
Lesson: Reclaiming agency begins with reclaiming the capacity to reflect — to step back from the menu of algorithmic choices and ask, “Why am I choosing this?”
Plato — the good, knowledge, and engineered souls
Plato worried about who educates souls. For him, shaping the soul rightly was the work of the polis led by the wise. Modern “ed-tech” and pervasive platforms are Plato’s guardians in disguise — except their aim is not the good but profit. Plato’s fear of manipulable citizens is echoed today when platforms engineer desires and produce “preferences” that are as much manufactured as discovered.
Lesson: Civic education must resist being outsourced to commercial systems that administer taste and belief rather than nurture judgment.
Aristotle — practical reason and flourishing (eudaimonia)
Aristotle grounds flourishing in phronesis (practical wisdom) — the capacity to deliberate about the good life in concrete situations. Agency for Aristotle is intellectual and moral competence exercised in community. Surveillance erodes phronesis by outsourcing deliberation to predictive systems and shrinking opportunities for practice and moral habituation.
Lesson: Policies and institutions should cultivate contexts in which people practice decision-making (schools, public spaces, civic forums), not reduce those contexts to data extractors.
Hobbes — security at the cost of liberty
Thomas Hobbes argued that people accept an absolute sovereign to escape the “war of all against all.” The surveillance bargain often echoes Hobbes: we trade privacy for security and convenience. But Hobbes’s logic was a one-off social contract; contemporary surveillance is ongoing and expands without reciprocal accountability.
Lesson: Security must not be an open-ended excuse for power. The social contract requires limits, transparency, and the possibility of exit — all of which surveillance convenience erodes.
Locke — consent, property, and the right to dissent
Locke anchors political legitimacy in informed consent and property rights. When consent is routinized into unreadable clickwraps, and personal data becomes the de facto property of platforms, Locke’s conditions for legitimate governance vanish. Further, Locke’s right to dissent — to withhold consent — is nullified if refusal means losing access to essentials.
Lesson: Genuine consent requires information, meaningful alternatives, and protection of spheres that are not alienable by market contract.
Rousseau — the general will and manufactured consent
Rousseau emphasized the general will and warned against artificial inequalities that corrupt social bonds. Surveillance contributes to manufactured consent: algorithmically amplified preferences become indistinguishable from the “will”, but they reflect corporate design rather than civic deliberation.
Lesson: Democratic life depends on collective deliberation realms that are independent of marketized suggestion engines.
Marx — commodification and alienation
Marx’s critique of capitalism — commodification and alienation — maps directly onto surveillance capitalism. Where Marx saw labor converted into commodity and humans alienated from their productive activity, Zuboff and others show how experience and attention are commodified. People are alienated from their inner lives when those lives are rendered as behavioral surplus for markets.
Lesson: Resist the reduction of lived experience into sellable inputs; create institutional forms that reclaim value for communities (cooperatives, public data trusts).
Gramsci — hegemony and cultural consent
For Gramsci, power is sustained not only by force but by cultural hegemony — consent manufactured through culture. The celebration of “smart” as modernity is a Gramscian triumph: industries produce cultural meanings that normalise surveillance. When being “modern” equals being “watched,” hegemony is complete.
Lesson: Counter-hegemony—alternative narratives, public pedagogy, and cultural institutions—is essential to delegitimise surveillance as progress.
Polanyi — the double movement and market society
Karl Polanyi’s “double movement” argued that market expansion is met by social pushback when social life is threatened. Surveillance capitalism is an extreme marketization of social life. Polanyi predicts resistance: social policies, collective institutions, and legal controls will arise to shield life from market commodification.
Lesson: Strengthening social protections and public provisioning (healthcare, education, finance) is the institutional side of resistance.
Foucault — discipline, biopower, and the panopticon
Michel Foucault’s analysis of disciplinary power and the panopticon is perhaps the most immediately resonant. Surveillance technologies are modern panopticons; their power is normalising and self-policing. But Foucault extends beyond visible towers to bio-power — governance of bodies, health, reproduction. Smart skin and data infrastructures are mechanisms of bio-power, making populations legible and governable.
Lesson: Countering surveillance requires not only privacy laws but also a political critique of the ways power shapes knowledge, health, and bodies.
Arendt — action, plurality, and the public space of freedom
Hannah Arendt insisted that freedom is realized in collective action and speech — the “space of appearance.” Surveillance destroys the conditions for such action by making speech and association visible and punishable. If plurality (diverse voices acting together) is the condition of political freedom, then a system that renders dissent legible is an existential threat to democracy.
Lesson: Protecting public spaces—physical and digital—where people can act without being catalogued is central to preserving freedom.
Amartya Sen — capabilities and real freedom
Sen reframes freedom in terms of capabilities: what people are actually able to do and be. Surveillance convenience can appear to increase opportunities (access to apps), but it may simultaneously erode real freedoms by constraining choices and damaging capabilities (education, health, civic participation).
Lesson: Policies should evaluate technologies by their effect on capabilities, not only on nominal access or economic efficiency.
Zuboff — surveillance capitalism and the right to an unmanipulated life
Shoshana Zuboff names the phenomenon: surveillance capitalism. She explains the extraction of behavioral surplus and the market for prediction. Her central claim is normative: people have the right to an unmanipulated life. Surveillance capitalism is a systemic threat to autonomy, democracy, and human dignity.
Lesson: Beyond analysis, Zuboff calls for regulatory and civic remedies to restore the boundary between human experience and market extraction.
Bringing the Voices Together: What the Tradition Tells Us
Taken together, these thinkers form a moral and political compass:
Socrates–Aristotle–Arendt: Freedom is practical, collective, and expressive. It requires spaces for deliberation and action.
Hobbes–Locke–Rousseau: Political legitimacy depends on consent and institutional limits; coercive substitution of consent with engineered defaults is illegitimate.
Marx–Polanyi–Gramsci: Market power, commodification, and cultural hegemony explain how surveillance becomes normalised — and how social resistance can be organized.
Foucault–Zuboff–Sen: Power operates by making life legible and manipulable; remedy requires attention to both capabilities and the political technologies that shape them.
These philosophers converge on one point: agency is not optional. It is the precondition for moral responsibility, political action, and human flourishing. Without it, rights and laws are paper shields.
Practical Implications Drawn from Theory
Philosophy is not just abstraction. From these convergences arise concrete steps:
Protect spheres of unobserved life (Arendt, Locke): explicitly shield private domains (home, doctor–patient, confessional).
Auditable limits on manipulation (Zuboff, Foucault): forbid opaque predictive nudging for profit; require transparency and redress.
Capability-based evaluation (Sen): assess tech by whether it enlarges real freedoms.
Counter-hegemonic culture (Gramsci): public education and media campaigns that revalue autonomy over “smartness.”
Institutional public alternatives (Polanyi): invest in public platforms for health, education, finance that don’t monetize experience.
Legal consent that is meaningful (Locke): no clickwraps; true opt-in, with viable non-digital options.
Closing Syllogism: Agency → Freedom → Democracy
If agency is the necessary condition for freedom, and freedom is the soil of democracy, then the erosion of agency by surveillance convenience and deprivation threatens democracy itself. The philosophers show us both the diagnosis and the direction of remedy: not merely new rules, but new habits, institutions, and cultures that restore people as agents — not merely as data sources.
